Real Madrid are looking to pursue a move for Lionel Messi‘s international teammate Mauro Icardi to address their goal-scoring issues.

Real Madrid’s biggest problem of last season is once again coming into light this time out- finishing. Karim Benzema is dropping brilliant performances all season long, but he is more of a nine and a half than a lethal goal scorer despite his magnificent numbers. Luka Jovic and Gareth Bale meanwhile have both not chipped in with goals when they have had chances.

Two more points were dropped by the 13 time European champions who are now clearly behind Barcelona on second place after a 0-0 draw against Athletic Bilbao. The woodwork did block three good chances from the Whites, but even from an overall perspective there was a lot to separate the two sides apart from the goals.

Zinedine Zidane insisted once more that he does not intend to bring in a striker into his squad during January, but Diario GOL has claimed that Florentino Perez is still looking to sign Argentina international Mauro Icardi next summer. Jovic has not had too many chances, but even when he has played, his involvement has been less.

Mauro Icardi is absolutely killing it for Paris Saint-Germain this season and has emerged ahead of Edinson Cavani as the main striker under Thomas Tuchel. Icardi has scored 13 times in 16 games this season in Ligue 1 and the UEFA Champions League and at the end of his loan spell next year, PSG do have an option to buy him which they are likely to exercise.

Icardi will probably win the Ligue 1 and other French trophies this season with Paris Saint-Germain, so if Real Madrid end up showing interest in him he may push for a move to Spain instead of Paris next summer. The forward is not on good terms with compatriot Lionel Messi of Barcelona, so he would like to prove a point at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Premier League giants Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur have also shown interest in signing Icardi lately. The Citizens are interested in replacing Sergio Aguero as Gabriel Jesus has been futile in the bigger matches, while Jose Mourinho’s side is keen on signing a partner for Harry Kane in order to reduce the scoring burden.
