Atletico Madrid are on the verge of signing Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani.

Scoring has been Atletico Madrid’s Achille’s heel this season but the club believe they have found a solution to their problem.

According to Marca, Atletico are closing in on the Uruguayan and all that is left is an agreement between them and PSG. Diario AS report that Atletico and Cavani are in agreement on a three-year deal.

Cavani has lost importance at PSG since the arrival of Neymar two seasons ago and the arrival of Mauro Icardi this season. Icardi was brought in on loan from Inter Milan and has been preferred by Thomas Tuchel over Cavani.

The 32-year old had long been linked with a move to MLS considering his contract with PSG ends at the end of the season. But it now appears that Spain will be his next destination.

Atletico are in desperate need of help in the striker position. Despite signing Joao Felix on a record fee, Diego Simeone‘s side have struggled to score. They’ve only scored 20 times so far which ranks them down the bottom of the league.

Joao Felix has spent a significant chunk of the season injured and Alvaro Morata seems to run hot and cold. Things were made even direr when Diego Costa went down with a back injury. The injury forced him to get surgery and won’t be back until late in the second half of the season.

Cavani could turn into the perfect complement for Joao Felix. Cavani is a striker with a physical game who can bully around defenses as well as technically adept who can finish with the best of them. Simeone’s plan could be to recreate what he had when he had a healthy Diego Costa and Antoine Griezmann.

Their lack of threat up top has cost Atletico as they were unable to take advantage of the early struggles from Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Atletico currently sit fourth in the league, seven points behind of Barcelona. Signing a veteran like Cavani may contradict Simeone’s claim that they are in a rebuilding year given his age.

Cavani has only scored three goals in eleven matches but that’s been in limited action. If he gets more playing time with Atletico Madrid and it translates to goals, it could turn into a very good signing by Los Colchoneros.
