Paulo Dybala’s free kick vs Atletico Madrid

It has been over a month since Paulo Dybala scored this goal and I honestly still can’t believe he even attempted the shot.

The second time Juventus and Atletico Madrid met, Juventus had already advanced to the knockout stages, but Atletico was still very much in contention for first place in the group. With a win, Juve would win the group before even playing their 6th match of the group stage, but an Atletico win would have made things very interesting as the teams would have been tied on points, but Atletico would have owned the head-to-head tiebreaker.

defenses stood their ground throughout the match and kept their opponents from being able to create anything too dangerous. Juventus just happened to have one moment of magic that swung the match in their favor.

Atletico committed a foul just outside their penalty area that gave Juve a free kick that was close enough to the end line to make the angle extremely difficult to score from. It seemed obvious that Miralem Pjanic was going to send the free kick into the box in the hopes one of his teammates would head it home. Instead, Dybala ended up curling it in off the bottom of the crossbar.

This goal was absolutely sensational because of the angle Dybala scored from and it delivered 1st place in the group for Juve with a match to spare, something that hadn’t happened for Juve in over 20 years. This will be the goal that sticks with me from the first half of Juve’s season long after the season is over and that’s why it is my most memorable moment of the season so far from Juve.
