Experimentation can cost millions and millions of dollars. Scientists carry out experiments to prove their hypothesis. At times, they are successful in determining the conclusion and at times, the entire experiment is a complete failure.

In football terms, signing a player for the club by paying a hefty fee is a risky experiment. If the player shines, the coach and the management have proved their hypothesis in front of the audience but if the player is unsuccessful in delivering the intended outcome, the world laughs at him and at the club.

Same has become the situation of Nicolas Pepe at Arsenal. Arsenal broke the bank to sign the Ivorian from Lille after he produced alluring displays in the Ligue 1. 23 goals and 12 assists in Lille shirt last season were enough to make the Gunners believe in his talents. Taking note of his remarkable performances that helped LOSC achieve second place in the league, Arsenal splashed £72 million on the highly-rated winger.

Sadly, the return of this gargantuan investment has been abysmal. Nicolas Pepe continues to embarrass himself on the field and makes every educated football fan wonder why Arsenal paid such an exorbitant sum for the 24-year-old. 4 goals and 4 assists in 21 games clearly indicate how appalling Pepe has been.  In less than six months of his arrival, it has been clear he is a failed experiment and needs to be remodelled before playing him again.

Nicolas Pepe has been so ineffective that Arsenal new boss, Mikel Arteta, has already started to seek options on the wing. Arteta has admitted that a lot of work needs to be done on the Ivorian and he won’t be ready to take on the challenges of the Premier League very soon. Arsenal is believed to enter the January transfer market with the aim of repairing the defence and strengthening the attack.

According to the Mirror, the North London club are interested in signing Thomas Lemar from Atletico Madrid in the winter transfer window. The report further added that with Pepe underperforming and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang considering his future, Lemar’s addition could be vital.

Lemar was on the Gunners’ radar when he was catching the eye at Monaco in 2018, and came very close to signing for the North London club. However, Atletico Madrid had the last laugh beating Arsenal to the Frenchman’s signature for a whopping fee of £53 million.

Initially, things panned out well for the 24-year-old but the French international has faced challenges this season. Lemar has failed to score a single goal in 15 La Liga appearances this term. Gunners feel they can take advantage of the fact Lemar has not been a regular starter under Diego Simeone.

The ex-Monaco man is contracted at Wanda Metropolitano till summer 2023 and Arsenal will have to pay a lot of money for a star who is untested in the Premier League (again!). A Nicolas Pepe-Thomas Lemar swap is entirely possible, bearing in mind Atleti are willing to accept Pepe.

Arsenal might be putting their foot on the wrong paddle here. They again want to take the risk and carry out the Thomas Lemar experiment while still dealing with repercussions of Nicolas Pepe catastrophe.

Do you think Arsenal should experiment on Lemar taking into account that Pepe has already failed?
