Arsenal’s performance was a delight to watch…

New Years night saw Arsenal host Manchester United in the Premier League. It was an enthralling tie that football fans have always been excited to watch. Although the fixture doesn’t hold the same novelty as it once did with both sides experiencing a drop in recent seasons, this match did not disappoint.

Unless you’re a Manchester United fan of course, in which case this article probably isn’t for you. Because not only did Arsenal beat the Red Devils but one of their main transfer targets was in the stands watching.

According to the Daily Star, Samuel Umtiti was in the crowd watching the Gunners turn over a lethargic Manchester United side. This report has fueled the links between Arsenal and Samuel Umtiti, who has been linked with a move away from Camp Nou in the last couple of transfer windows.

David Luiz won man of the match in this performance, so this just goes to show the amount of emphasis Mikel Arteta has placed on the defensive organisation. While his philosophy is very much attack-orientated, this is made possible by communication at the back so the defenders play an equally pivotal role.

If Samuel Umtiti were to join the North London side this month then he would have the honour of working under Arteta in this new system. Umtiti has the ability to play out from the back, which is an important asset of Pep Guardiola‘s philosophy, Arteta’s previous teacher let’s not forget.

That said, the signing of Umtiti would make sense, however, there is bound to be some uncertainty in the Arsenal dugout. The French defender has spent a lot of time on the treatment table since his arrival in Catalonia, which is the last thing the Gunners need.
