3. Solve the right back problem

Serge Aurier has played well early in Mourinho’s tenure, but he’s not going to stay in Tottenham’s starting XI for an extended period of time. The first time he makes a maniacal challenge that costs Spurs’ points he will end up in Mourinho’s doghouse.

As such, there are multiple reports linking Tottenham with other right backs this January. The best possible option seems to be a sizable move for Leicester City’s Ricardo Pereira. Per The Daily Mail, Tottenham are willing to pay £30 million for his services. He’s just the sort of player that would walk right into Mourinho’s starting XI. Unfortunately, it’s hard to envision a reason why the Foxes would sell him to a Premier League rival.

Instead, the proper move for Spurs would be to buy a younger player with the potential to develop into a Premier League star under Mourinho’s watchful eye. Nathan Ferguson is the proper target for Spurs in this respect.

According to The Mirror, Tottenham are in the “pole position” to sign the West Brom youngster. He’s not ready to play meaningful minutes right away, but he’s also going to be priced accordingly. The fact that his contract will expire at the end of this season gives Spurs a ton of leverage. In this projection, we’re expecting Tottenham to pay £15 million for the talented youngster.

That would give Mourinho a young wingback to mold and still leave the club £75 million to spend on other areas.
