Spurs must enter transfer market to find Kane replacement
Tottenham need to find a replacement for Harry Kane to salvage their season.
Tottenham suffered a major blow as the extent of Harry Kane’s injury was confirmed. It’s bad news as the star striker is expected to be out until at least March with a torn hamstring.
The club released a statement providing an update after Kane was forced to come in their defeat against Southampton.
According to ESPN, the statement said,
"“We can confirm that Harry Kane suffered a tear in his left hamstring during our New Year’s Day fixture against Southampton. Our medical staff will continue to review the injury with treatment ongoing.”"
Jose Mourinho was not very optimistic when he was asked about the status of his striker.
According to The Guardian, he said,
"“If you ask my feeling – good news or bad news – I am more on bad news than good news, that’s my feeling. What the player felt, Harry Kane leaving the match, the way he did it, he didn’t think twice, it didn’t take him two seconds to realize the severity of the situation.”"
Not only are Spurs losing one of the best strikers in Europe, they are also losing their only real striker on the team.
When Kane was injured last season, they used Son Heung-min. He’s not a pure striker but he gets the job done. Fernando Llorente was used sparingly last season and is no longer with the club.
What that means for Tottenham is that they need to be active in the transfer market to find someone who can replace Kane. It does not have to be someone for the long-term but perhaps the medium-term because it’s evident how fragile the team is in that position.
The club is already linked with a move for Lille midfielder Boubakary Soumare and now need to add striker to their list.
Fortunately, there are a couple of names out there who could be looking for new teams.
Borussia Dortmund’s Paco Alcacer is such one name as his status with the German side is now in question after the arrival of Erling Haaland. Dortmund have placed a €40 million price tag on the former Barcelona player which might be out of Spurs’ price range.
Other less expensive options include Edinson Cavani and Cedric Bakambu.
Cavani is out of contract with PSG in the summer and has already been linked with a move to Atletico Madrid. Tottenham may be able to get him for a reduced price but his age, 32, may be a problem. The Uruguayan would be more of a stop-gap than anything else.
Bakambu is one of the more interesting options out there. His sudden availability has to do with the bubble bursting in the Chinese Super League and clubs no longer being able to pay exorbitant wages for foreign players.
He’s unlikely to cost as much as Alcacer and is younger than Cavani. He was prolific during his time at Villarreal and would provide similar qualities like Harry Kane.
In any case, it is imperative that Tottenham find a replacement. While they were able to get to the Champions League final without him, that was under a different manager and things with Jose Mourinho are already starting to turn sour.
They drew a somewhat favorable opponent in RB Leipzig but they are by no means a pushover. The tightest margins may decide this tie and having a reliable striker will make a significant difference.
Their situation in the league is also rather tenuous as they sit six points behind the last Champions League spot.
They are in the middle of a rough patch and the Harry Kane news only makes their situation worse.
Daniel Levy is notorious for now wanting to spend money. But if he wants to make Mourinho happy and have a chance of being back in Europe’s elite competition, he’s going to need to make an investment and find someone who can come close to providing the same output as Harry Kane.
