Harry Kane is set for an extended injury absence, but don’t expect Tottenham to turn to Troy Parrott to fill the star striker’s boots.

Any Tottenham fans hoping to see Troy Parrott burst onto the scene to fill-in for Harry Kane this month need to think again. Jose Mourinho’s recent comments about the Irish starlet make it clear he won’t be leadin the line for Spurs anytime soon.

The Tottenham manager still believes Parrott has a lot of talent, but is adamant that he’s not ready to be thrown into the deep water of Premier League football quite yet. His most recent comments recorded by Football London make it quite clear that Parrott has a long way to go before he’s ready for the big time. The Portuguese gaffer referred to any 17-year-old trying to break through to the senior squad as “babies.” That is hardly a ringing endorsement of Parrott’s ability to cover for Kane at his tender age.

The revelation that Parrott isn’t ready to play big minutes up top could be a clear signal that Spurs are in the market for a backup striker this month. The club have been linked with a few names abroad, but outside of Vedat Muriqi it’s hard to see a player who really lines up well in the club’s price range.

As such, it’s also posssible that Mourinho will simply turn to Heung-Min Son to cover for Kane once the prolific Korean returns from suspension. He’s provided a goal scoring threat in Kane’s absence several times over the past few years, but it’s far from an ideal solution for Spurs. Moving Son from the wing to striker leaves a hole the club still needs to fill out wide.

No matter what Mourinho chooses to do in the short-term, it’s clear that Tottenham need to strengthen their attacking options sooner, rather than later. January might be too soon, but Spurs will need to find a striker to bridge the gap between Kane and Parrott sometime before next season begins.
