Jesse Lingard has not been a good performer for Manchester United…

2019 was not the year for Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard and it appears 2020 might not be his year either. In his first match of the new decade, Lingard and Manchester United took on arch-rivals Arsenal where they had an equal chance of victory but Mikel Arteta‘s men made them look silly. Jesse Lingard was brought off in the match in the place of Mason Greenwood and, in many ways, this could be a testament to the future of the Englishman.

According to The Mirror, Lingard could have a get out of jail free card. The report claims that the Red Devils want to sign Leicester City’s James Maddison. United will need to offer around £45m plus fellow Englishman Jesse Lingard for the Leicester forward.

More from Manchester United

Maddison has been in amazing form for Leicester, much unlike Lingard for Manchester United. Leicester currently sit in second of the Premier League and Maddison has been a key figurehead. His crossing and through-ball ability and all-round creative prowess have allowed him to contribute to six goals and three assists.

He has been a nightmare to defend against, which is exactly what Manchester United need right now. Their main problem is that they don’t really have a plan B and only excel in games which require counter-attacking.

While Leicester are almost certainly a counter-attacking side and don’t rely on possession, Maddison is able to dictate play in the final third and calm the play down when Manchester United would be in possession. That said, it’s easy to see why Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is interested in signing him.

It’s going to be an interesting January transfer window in the Premier League with many young Englishman impressing in matches so far. Whether or not Maddison chooses a new club remains to be seen but one thing’s for sure, it would take some serious thinking if he was to leave Leicester where he seems to have it all.
