Arsenal: Mikel Arteta pushing for his first defensive signing
By Kian Long
Arsenal could be in for another defensive option this January…
Building the perfect defence cannot be done in a singular transfer window. Even Pep Guardiola took time to craft his title-winning defence over the course of a few windows. However, Mikel Arteta isn’t going to sit around and let Arsenal’s problems persist.
As was demonstrated against Manchester United last week, Arsenal defenders are able to do their jobs effectively when they communicate. However, they will be the first to admit they could do with a helping hand, especially with the injuries faced so far, with Calum Chambers adding to this list.
According to Footmercato, a French news outlet, Arsenal representatives are in ongoing talks with Bayern Munich over the signing of Jerome Boateng. It’s thought that the Gunners have expressed their interest in the German World Cup winner who ages at 31 years old.

Boateng has plenty of experience at the top level, where has led both Germany to a World Cup and Bayern Munich to a Champions League. Along with those prestigious honours, Boateng has a handy seven Bundesliga trophies to his name, all of which have been won in the last seven seasons. Not bad.
So, why would a player who appears to have it all in Germany want to join Arsenal? Well, a lot of players reach a stage of comfort in their career but depending on their mindset, many tend not to settle for this. Take Cristiano Ronaldo for example, who wanted to join Juventus to challenge for the Champions League and Neymar joining Paris Saint-Germain for a similar reason.
While Arsenal won’t be challenging for the Champions League anytime soon, the intent is there. Times are promising under Mikel Arteta and Jerome Boateng wants to be a part of this exciting mission back to success.
Arteta is implementing an attacking philosophy at Arsenal but it depends on a tight, communicative and full-throttle defence in order to achieve its task. Jerome Boateng is the perfect guy for this since he has the ability to be aggressive in his tackling and he works well as part of a system. He is getting on a bit but he would be a good short-term option for Arteta.
Do you think Arsenal will sign Jerome Boateng this transfer window?
