Keep, sell, or loan: How Juventus should handle their squad this month
By John Vaccaro
Adrien Rabiot
Adrien Rabiot is another player who has been the subject of transfer rumors already this season, but those were more prevalent when he wasn’t getting playing time for Juve. Now that he is playing more regularly and starting to play better, I don’t expect Juventus to let him go during the winter transfer window. In fact, I think he’ll be a regular starter soon, which would make him untouchable for the time being.
Keep
Blaise Matuidi
Blaise Matuidi is a player I’m not the fence about. Juve’s midfield isn’t as deep as they looked before the season because of injuries and they haven’t yer made an offer for a player that would make me think reinforcements are on the way right now. However, Blaise Matudi hasn’t really had much of anything to offer Juve this season. His defensive contribution hasn’t been as substantial as past years, he is a negative on the attacking end, and Juve has multiple players who can provide the same benefits he does without the attacking hindrance. I believe he should be sold to open a starting spot for Adrien Rabiot, but the fact that Sarri still believes he should be in the starting lineup makes it hard to imagine him being sold right now.
Should sell, but won’t
Emre Can
Emre Can is another interesting case in this midfield. He was left out of Juve’s Champions League squad and rarely appeared in the first half of the season. It seemed like he was destined for a transfer. Now Juve is saying he is off the market and is a part of their plans for the rest of the season. However, he didn’t even start against Cagliari with Bentancur unavailable. I’m starting to think the reports that they aren’t selling are just to help them at the negotiating table. I really don’t see his value on this team or where they find playing time for him unless another midfielder is sold. Instead, I thin we’ll see him sold before the end of January.
Sell
Sami Khedira
If Sami Khedira were healthy right now, he’d be number one on my list of players Juve needs to sell. However, his injury will make it impossible for Juve to get rid of him until the summer. He doesn’t serve a purpose for the team and was a complete waste of a starting spot for most of the first half of the season. Hopefully he can get healthy in time for the summer window so Juve can get rid of him.
Forced to keep
Simone Muratore
I almost didn’t include Simone Muratore one this list. He hasn’t really been a factor for Juve yet and has only played a single minute this year. However, the fact that he actually got to appear in Juve’s last Champions League match leads me to believe they have plans for his future. He isn’t going to make the jump straight from the Serie C U23 team all the way to Serie A, so they should start looking for loan options in Serie B to get a better look at what he’s capable of and give him the chance to develop some more.
