Tottenham are finally buying another striker, but shelling out big money for Krzysztof Piatek is a massive risk by the higher-ups at Spurs.

The good news for Tottenham fans is that their favourite club have finally purchased a striker capable of providing cover for Harry Kane. The bad news is that Spurs supporters can’t be remotely confident in Krzystof Piatek’s ability to bang in goals for the North London club.

According to The Sun, Tottenham are closing in on a £24 million move for the AC Milan striker. Piatek is certainly a striker with the natural talent to perform as a high-quality Premier League striker. However, his play in Serie A this season has left a ton to be desired. Piatek has only managed to score four times in 18 league appearances on the current campaign.

The important thing for Tottenham is to give Piatek the time and space required to grow into the role as the club’s top striker. The chances of him arriving in England and immediately dominating games under Jose Mourinho’s watchful eye are almost zero. Instead, the plan at Spurs must be to bed him into the squad slowly.

That will be a massive challenge for Mourinho and his coaching staff to undertake. There will be a natural temptation to push Piatek immediately into the starting XI upon his arrival. After all, Spurs won’t have Kane to lead their line until April at the absolute earliest. Keeping a high-priced striker on the bench in Kane’s absence will be quite a chore for Tottenham’s coaching staff.

No matter what happens, the purchase of Piatek should quell concerns about Tottenham’s willingness to invest money for players during the January transfer window. Quite a bit of work will still need to be done to mold the club in Mourinho’s image, but buying a talented striker like Piatek is a quality step in the right direction. Purchasing him is a risky move for Spurs, but it’s a risk well worth taking.
