Moussa Dembele would be an excellent deputy for Harry Kane at Tottenham, but he’d prefer to remain at Lille instead of serving as a backup at Spurs.

Tottenham continue to scour Europe for strikers capable of filling in for Harry Kane. Moussa Dembele is certainly a player capable of thriving in the Premier League, but unfortunately for Spurs, he’s not going to move to North London to play second fiddle to Kane.

Goal is one of several publications linking Spurs with an interest in the Lille hitman. The idea of Jose Mourinho seeing a great deal of talent in Dembele isn’t far-fetched at all. The 23-year-old Frenchman has caught the eye of numerous Premier League clubs during the past several seasons. Scoring 10 goals in just 14 league matches this season for Lille has only raised his stock across the continent.

Even if Spurs were willing to stump the substantial transfer fee required to sign Dembele, it’s highly unlikely they’d be able to convince him to make the move to North London. His next move should be to a club that’s willing to commit to him as their starting No. 9 for years to come. Dembele could occupy that spot at Tottenham for a few months, but he’d immediately move back to second choice striker as soon as Kane gets healthy.

As such, he’s better off staying with Lille until he finds a big club willing to really commit to him as the leader of their attack. He has several years left before he truly hits his prime years as a footballer. He doesn’t need to take the first offer from a “big” club that comes his way. It’s imperative that he remain selective if he wants to ascend to the top-tier of football.

As such, Spurs will need to look elsewhere in their search for a striker capable of providing cover for Kane. It’s quite a challenge for the club to find a prospect talented enough to become a star that isn’t already prepared to demand a regular place in the starting XI. Tottenham will continue to search diligently for that player, but it’s a process that could easily drag on into the summer.
