Real Madrid defeated Atletico Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup but lost their star defender in the process.

The Spanish Super Cup was a success for Real Madrid as the new format allowed gave them an opportunity to win a title and they took full advantage of it.

However, the jubilation did not last long for one Sergio Ramos as despite scoring the penalty to seal the win, came away from the game with a foot injury.

According to Marca, Ramos suffered the injury in the 61st minute of the game in a jump with Atletico striker Alvaro Morata. But Ramos continued playing.

Ramos himself knew something was wrong when he stepped up to take the decisive penalty.

According to Diario AS, he said,

"“I thought about shooting it like that [a Panenka] but my ankle wasn’t feeling well enough to do that and I thought the best thing was to make sure of it.”"

He now faces a race to be fit for the away match against Real Valladolid.

Unfortunately for Real Madrid, the two-week recovery time means that their star defender is going to miss their clash against Sevilla at home. Ramos always seems to be a protagonist in high-profile matches and even more so against his former club.

The real concern will come following the Valladolid match as their next opponent will be Atletico Madrid in the Madrid Derby. Fortunately for them, the game will be at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The injury to Sergio Ramos means that Eder Militao will be given the opportunity to partner Raphael Varane in the defense.

He hasn’t played too often despite the hefty price tag the club paid to Porto. Zinedine Zidane has stuck to what has worked but isn’t afraid to bench some of the more influential players on his team. He’s already done it to Marcelo and opted to play Ferland Mendy ahead of him.

Sergio Ramos may make some questionable decisions in certain games but there is no denying that he is an emblematic figure at Real Madrid and even though the injury isn’t too severe, he’s going to be a huge miss for the club these next two weeks.
