Tottenham will need to pay a sizable fee to pry Max Aarons away from Norwich, but it’s a move worth making for Jose Mourinho and Spurs.

Serge Aurier has played well at right back during Jose Mourinho’s tenure at Tottenham, but the Ivory Coast international is a ticking time bomb on the pitch. As such, Spurs have to purchase a new starting right back at their earliest opportunity.

There’s plenty of talk about the North London’s club to purchase a new striker or two this month, but right back should be just as much of a priority. That’s why Tottenham are doing the absolute right thing by focusing their trasfer energy on buying Max Aarons.

According to Football Insider, officials at Tottenham are making daily calls to Norwich in hopes of convincing the Canaries to part with their talented 20-year-old fullback. To date, Norwich have steadfastly refused to engage in discussions about selling him in January. Mourinho and the rest of the higher-ups at Spurs are doing everything they can to change their minds.

Aarons is tailor-made to walk right into the Tottenham starting XI. He’s certainly not fully formed as a player, but he’s already proven to be a capable starter at right back in the Premier League. Accomplishing that feat at 20 years of age is a terrific accomplishment.

Predictably, Aarons still is guilty of the odd mistake or two on the defensive end of the pitch. He’s got loads of pace and quickness, but needs to add strength to really battle with physical Premier League attackers.

On the flip side, he’s aready a terrific talent going forward with the ball at his feet. He’s got enough crossing ability to give Spurs the wide threat they had when Kieran Trippier was pinging crosses into the box. Fortunately, he has more to his game than the former Spurs star.

The real question Tottenham need to ask Norwich is just how much it will take to make a move happen in January. Spurs shouldn’t even contemplate making an offer that doesn’t exceed £50 million. Buying a young, Englishman who has alreayd cemented himself as a Premier League starter is never going to be a cheap proposition.

It’s a move Spurs have to make though. They need to start their squad overhaul under Mourinho as soon as possible. The January market isn’t terribly efficient, but Tottenham can’t let the possibility of signing Aarons pass them by again. He must emerge as the club’s top transfer priority in the coming days.
