ST: Romelu Lukaku

Romelu Lukaku is quickly making people forget about last season’s struggles now that he has joined Inter Milan. He has already surpassed his goal tally from all of last season with Manchester United. His 14 league goals have him tied with Cristiano Ronaldo for second place in the Capocannoniere race and he scored a couple in the Champions League this season.

On Wednesday, he added 2 more goals to his total for the season in his first Coppa Italia appearance. Now he returns to Serie A action where he has impressively accrued 4 goals and 2 assists over his last 3 matches. Lukaku has quickly made Inter fans forget about Mauro Icardi and has himself in the conversation of best strikers in the league. If his first match against Lecce is any indication, he’ll continue his impressive run this weekend.

ST: Lautaro Martinez

More from Serie A

I actually believe that Lautaro Martinez is more responsible for Inter’s success than Lukaku this season. It’s not because he has outplayed Lukaku, but because he has given Inter a second reliable scorer. Lukaku was brought in to replace Mauro Icardi, but Martinez’s emergence has given them something they couldn’t count on before this season began.

Like Lukaku, he has already outproduced his numbers from all of last season and isn’t far off from doubling last year’s output. To me, that’s the big difference between last year’s Inter squad and this one that is making a strong push to finally dethrone Juventus.

He scored Inter’s only goal against Atalanta and has scored in each of his last two starts. Inter scored 4 the first time they played Lecce, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise if Martinez extends his scoring streak to 3 matches.
