Real Madrid vs. Atletico Madrid (02/01)

El Derbi Madrileñois just around the corner. The local rivalry between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid is one of the most intense rivalries in all of Europe. The giants from Madrid have played against each other 222 times and Los Blancos have dominated this series with 110 victories. The Rojiblancos are well behind with only 57 victories to their name.

The two teams recently competed against each other in the Supercopa de España in Saudi Arabia. It was a competitive game that ended 0-0, but Real Madrid took the trophy home after winning the penalty shootout. The next derby will be played at the Santiago Bernabeu. Not only is this game important because of the deep rivalry between both clubs, but the result will also have a major impact shaping the top three places in the La Liga table.

Inter Milan vs. AC Milan (02/09)

A week after the major derby in Spain, Italy’s headlines will be centered on the Derby della Madonninathat will take place at the San Siro Stadium. Different narratives surround both clubs this season. Inter Milan are neck and neck with Juventus as they chase the Serie A title, whereas AC Milan are fighting to avoid finishing the season in the bottom half of the table.

Milan’s major clubs have stepped into battle 224 times. AC Milan enjoy a comfortable lead in this series with 112 victories compared to Inter Milan’s 81, but the Nerazzurri have defeated the Rossoneri in the last three meetings. Antonio Conte‘s men cannot afford to slip up against their rivals as Lazio are right on their heels in the Serie A title race.

Porto vs. Benfica (02/09)

The O Clássicois, in my opinion, the most underrated derby in Europe, but I hope this article incites some of you to tune into this clash between Porto and Benfica. The Portuguese giants have met 171 times in league action and the competitive nature of this derby is reflected in the fact that Porto only have ten more wins than Benfica, 67 compared to 57.

Benfica and Porto are the only two teams to have lifted the Primeira Liga trophy since 2010, and they both round out the top two in the table this season. The derby will be played in the beautiful Estádio do Dragão (Porto) and a win for Porto would pull them within four points of first place.
