Arsenal needn’t look any further for the answer to their midfield problems…

It’s the same old story for Arsenal. They have a frightening attack, in fact, it is one of the best in the league. However, it is their defence and midfield which has let them down this season. With Mikel Arteta recently taking the helm and now in charge of his first transfer window as head coach, he will have an eye on one or two defenders.

However, in my opinion, he doesn’t need to look any further than Bruno Guimaraes. Goal has reported that the Athletico Paranaense midfielder is in the midst of talks between his club and Arsenal’s technical director Edu. It’s thought that the deal could come to around £26m.

Guimaraes is a defensive midfielder, however, he is not limited to this position. At times this season, he has played a little further forward and he likes to play box-to-box anyway. He is a destructive midfielder that knows how to use his frame well. You can often find him out-muscling his opponent to win possession back for his side.

When he is on the ball, his play is mainly positive. What I mean by this is he likes to bring the ball forward with urgency into the final third, where he is a good passer of the ball. Whether it be a through-ball or an intricate, delicate pass, Guimaraes has it in his locker.

This type of midfielder is just what Arteta needs going forward. At the moment, Granit Xhaka and Lucas Torreira are forming a good partnership but they are a little consistent. This is because there is a clear missing piece to the puzzle and that could well be Bruno Guimaraes.

Bringing in the talented box-box midfielder would add a new dynamic to Arsenal’s play and he would do the defenders a favour too. This would enable Granit Xhaka all the freedom in the world and Guimaraes would probably play in a defensive midfield pivot alongside Torreira, where the Brazilian international would be given the license to bring the ball forward.
