There aren’t many players available this month who are capable of powering Tottenham to a top four finish. Edinson Cavani happens to be one of the few.

Tottenham’s dreams of securing another top four finish in the Premier League seem to be slipping away at the moment. The biggest reason why Spurs can’t move up the table is their lack of a quality option at striker. Signing Edinson Cavani this month would change that reality in an instant for Jose Mourinho and his coaching staff.

According to Sky Sports, it’s Chelsea who are the Premier League club most interested in the Uruguayan striker at the moment. Tottenham need to change that quickly. The fact that Cavani recently handed in his transfer request to officials at PSG means his transfer saga could reach an end sooner rather than later.

It’s hard to envision a striker better suited to make an instant impact for Mourinho than Cavani. At his core, he’s one of the best target men in Europe. His combinaton of size, speed and clever movements make him a nightmare for opposing defenders. Moving to the Premier League might require a slight period of adjustment for him, but it would only be a matter of time before he started to bang goals in left and right.

The real question is whether or not Spurs have the ability to convince Cavani they are the right club for him. He’d unquestionably start for Mourinho in the short-term, but Harry Kane is going to return from injury at some point. Cavani isn’t going to want to play second fiddle once that happens. He shared the spotlight with Zlatan Ibrahimovic for years in Paris, but he never seemed to really relish that circumstance.

As such, Mourinho would need to convince Cavani that he can be a co-star at Tottenham. Given Kane’s injury history that should be fairly easy to do. There are also multiple ways that the pair could play together at Spurs. Kane is at his best when he has the option to fall back and play as a No. 10 when the opposition allows it. Having Cavani on the pitch alongside him would create acres of space for Kane to possess the ball deep and unlock the defence with his world-class passing ability.

Next. Tottenham need to rethink their interest in Real Madrid star. dark

Admittedly, the idea of Cavani casting his lot with Tottenham this month does seem unlikely. Chelsea, and others do possess the financial power to blow Spurs out of the water. It doesn’t change the fact that Cavani would be a tremendous signing for Mourinho though. He’s the best option available for Tottenham at the moment.
