Tottenham might not sell Danny Rose this month, but it’s clear that Jose Mourinho doesn’t believe he has a long-term future with Spurs.

It wasn’t so long ago when Danny Rose could comfortably be called the best left back in England. unfortunately, those days have quickly disappeared for the 29-year-old defender. His career at Tottenham looks to be all but over after a stressful couple of days under new boss Jose Mourinho.

Per The Daily Mail, Mourinho is insistent that he doesn’t have any issue with Rose. That response comes after a number of reports claimed that the two headstrong men had a heated exchange during a training session at Hotspur Way. Mourinho claims it was a misunderstanding regarding the health of Rose’s back.

Even if you’re inclined to believe Mourinho’s explanation of events, it’s still obvious that Rose is headed out the door at Tottenham. The manager’s decision to play Japhet Tanganga out of position at left back ahead of Rose against Watford makes it obvious that Mourinho is ready to move on to other options.

In fairness, it’s been quite a while since Rose really played a consistent run of good football with Spurs. He’s a cult hero to some of the club’s supporters due to his outspoken words against Daniel Levy several years ago. On the other hand, it must be pointed out that Rose hasn’t played anything close to his best football since making those divisive comments.

Now the former English international’s best option seems to be securing a move to a Premier League club with more modest expectations. Newcastle have been linked with interest in a loan move for him this month. At the moment, Tottenham are holding out for a permanent move. The club’s stance might soften as the transfer deadline approaches.

No matter what happens with Rose over the next few weeks it’s clear that his time as a key player at Tottenham is over. His future clearly lies somewhere other than Spurs.
