The idea of Gareth Bale returning to Tottenham this month are nothing more than a fantasy. The finances make the deal impossible for Spurs to complete.

The thought of Gareth Bale returning to Tottenham to rescue Spurs from their current spell of mediocrity is enough to make any of the club’s passionate supporters sigh with delight. Unfortunately, it’s only an idea that works in daydreams. There’s zero chance that the Real Madrid star will return to his former club this month.

To put it bluntly, there’s no way Tottenham fan afford to make such a move occur. Jose Mourinho would certainly love the opportunity to manage the Welsh phenom, but he’s at the wrong club to make that happen. Even if Real Madrid are willing to part with Bale for free, Spurs are in no position to satisfy his astronomical wage demands.

Nonetheless, bettors in England seem to be falling for rumours linking Bale with a shock return to England. According to The Daily Mail, bookmaker Paddy Power has “suspended betting” on the possibility of Bale moving to Tottenham in January. In theory, this means that a rash of bets have been placed on the notion that Real Madrid and Tottenham can consummate this miracle transfer.

If Tottenham are able to secure any attacking players this month, look for Mourinho and company to be shopping at a much lower price point. Ideally, the club would like to bring in an established striker on loan to help cover for Harry Kane. Spurs officials are well aware they cannot afford to move for a player of the English hitman’s caliber. At best, they hope to find a band-aid that can help end their struggles in front of goal for the rest of the current campaign.

Rumours connecting Bale to a shock return to Tottenham will likely persist until the talented Welshman hangs up his playing boots. That doesn’t mean Spurs supporters should continue to get sucked into the idea that a return to North London is imminent. Stories linking Bale with a move to Spurs this month are poorly concocted fiction.
