Tottenham fans can forget about signing Bruno Fernandes in January
Bruno Fernandes would be an excellent replacement for Christian Eriksen at Tottenham, but Spurs have no chance to sign the midfielder in January.
Christian Eriksen’s status at Tottenham continues to hang around the club’s neck like a millstone. If the talented Dane does leave, it’s clear that Spurs would like to sign a like for like replacement. Bruno Fernandes would be an excellent fit for Jose Mourinho’s squad.
Unfortunately, the chances of Tottenham clinching a deal with Sporting CP for the 25-year-old’s services this month are almost non-existent. It’s a question of logic. If Manchester United are unable to afford Sporting CP’s asking price, it stands to reason that Tottenham would also be ruled out of a move due to finances.
As such, it seems clear that Fernandes will have to wait until the summer to secure a move to the Premier League. That’s good news for Sporting fans. He’s been a borderline dominant player for their club this season. His Whoscored.com player rating average of 7.83 in 16 league appearances this season makes it obvious that he’s the most important player in Sporting’s squad.
The fact that Fernandes almost certainly won’t be coming to North London this month is terrific news for several midfielders currently managed by Mourinho. In particular, Giovani Lo Celso is well positioned to take up Eriksen’s role as the club’s starting No. 10. He doesn’t play the game the same way Eriksen does, but his tenacity would be a big boost for a Tottenham squad that’s lacked a real edge for months.
The lack of a move by Fernandes also will provide Gedson Fernandes with a chance to make a big impression on his new manager. He’s only just arrived at Spurs from Benfica, but his willingness to run with the ball at his feet makes him an interesting option for Mourinho. He’ll get plenty of opportunities in the middle of the park for Tottenham over the next few months.
If Bruno Fernandes doesn’t move to England in January, it could give Tottenham a chance to reevaluate his availability in the summer. No matter what, he’s not coming to Spurs in January. Look for his transfer saga to drag on even longer.
