Steven Bergwijn won’t solve Tottenham’s striker issue, but he can turn into a massive boost for Jose Mourinho’s attack in relatively short order.

Some Tottenham supporters are bent out of shape to hear that their favourite club is closing in on acquiring PSV attacker Steven Bergwijn. Admittedly, he’s not the striker that Spurs desperately need, but he is a bright attacker who could turn into a Premier League star under Jose Mourinho.

An agreement between Tottenham and PSV hasn’t been reached as of yet, but officials at the Eredivisie club are openly admitting that Bergwijn is free to discuss a potential move with Spurs. There’s still time for Daniel Levy to botch the negotiations, but it seems that Tottenham are going to get this deal done sometime in the next 48-72 hours.

If the deal does come to fruition, Tottenham fans should celebrate it with gusto. Bergwijn is just the sort of bright young attacking talent that Spurs should be moving for on a regular basis. If Spurs had sanctioned several purchases akin to this move early in Mauricio Pochettino‘s reign it’s quite likely he’d still be managing the North London club.

Stylistically, Bergwijn will help Mourinho transition Tottenham to the 4-3-3 formation that he fancies at the moment. The 22-year-old Dutchman isn’t going to take Harry Kane‘s place as a classic No. 9 in that setup, but he can add goal scoring punch from either wing. Think of him as another player capable of tormenting opposing defences in the same manner that Heung-Min Son does when Tottenham are at full strength.

Bergwijn arguably possesses a higher ceiling than Son did when he arrived at Tottenham. He’s certainly a more complete player. Neither is going to be a dogged worker when his team loses possession, but Bergwijn is the superior player when it comes to setting up his teammates to score. He’s already notched 10 assists for PSV on the campaign. Tottenham could certainly benefit from adding an attacker who can make life easier for his fellow attackers.

Tottenham fans have a right to feel aggrieved if Bergwijn is the only purchase Spurs make in the coming week. They do not have a right to criticize his signing in a vacuum though. He’s just the sort of gamble the club should be making on a regular basis.
