5 important match-ups for Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid
Sergio Ramos vs Alvaro Morata
It’s never a derby without Sergio Ramos being in the thick of it. Last month, he scored the winning penalty against Simeone’s men while he was on target at the Wanda in 2018/19 as well. How he does against his former club colleague and current national teammate will be great to see, especially with Morata being Atletico’s powerful source of goals.
Alvaro Morata is yet to score in a Madrid Derby for Atletico Madrid and went without a goal in the fixture even while playing for Real Madrid. With the former Chelsea striker raring to go against his former club in front of his former fans, Sergio Ramos will need to cope up with his aerial abilities as well as crosses coming into Morata from either flanks.
Dani Carvajal vs Saul Niguez
Dani Carvajal will be Real Madrid’s source of attack amongst the full-backs as Ferland Mendy is not as good as his defensive partner or even Marcelo for that matter. Against a defensive Atletico side, he will come up against their left midfielder in Saul Niguez on several occasions and will hope to come out on top while going forward.
Saul will hope to tip Carvajal whilst counter-attacking, a form of transitioning which Atletico Madrid are heavily reliant on. With the former Real Madrid academy graduate cutting in to attack at times, Carvajal may have to leave his out-wide position. This will be one of the most interesting battles of the match to look for.
