Tottenham have made Max Aarons their top summer transfer target. Purchasing him will be much simpler if Norwich are relegated to the Championship.

Serge Aurier is Tottenham’s right back of the present but he doesn’t have a real future at Spurs. That’s why Jose Mourinho has identified Norwich fullback Max Aarons as his top transfer target for the summer.

Predictably, the Canaries would love to keep hold of their talented right back. If they manage to avoid relegation, they’ll have the ability to slap a massive transfer price on the youngster’s head. Then again, if Norwich can’t avoid falling down to the Championship next season, they may be forced to accept a modest transfer fee for their most valuable asset.

That’s why Tottenham officials will be watching Norwich’s play down the stretch with more than a casual interest. Their battle against relegation could drastically alter the buying power Spurs have this summer.

If Norwich does stay up it could cost Tottenham upwards of £50 million to secure Aarons’ services. That price tag will be slashed if they finish in the bottom three. Aarons would surely demand a move away from Norwich rather than toil in the Championship next season. Tottenham could be in a position to spend less than £20 million on Aarons’ under those circumstances.

Saving that kind of cash could easily be the difference in another potential starter for Mourinho and his coaching staff. The club recently paid just over £30 million to bring Steven Bergwijn to North London. That amount of transfer cash might be spent even more efficiently during the summer window.

If Tottenham can’t strike a deal for Aarons, it looks as if Nathan Ferguson could become the club’s backup plan. If he becomes the only right back Spurs buy this summer it’s very possible Serge Aurier will stay at the club for another season to mentor the youngster. Either way, it’s clear that Aurier’s days in Mourinho’s first XI are numbered.

dark. Next. Tottenham are starting to gel for Mourinho

Expect to see Tottenham linked with a plethora of other names in the coming months, but Aarons will absolutely be a top target for the club this summer. Officials in North London just want to see Norwich suffer the drop to lower their need to spend big money on the right back position.
