As the 2020 Olympics approach, the USWNT’s front line shows they are more than capable of stepping up in Alex Morgan’s absence.

Alex Morgan has been a star of the USWNT for many years now. With 107 international goals, she has proven she has an eye for goal.

Even on days where her overall performance is not at its peak, she always seems to find a way to get the ball in the back of the net. So what happens when your go-to goal scorer is pregnant and giving birth 4 months before the start of the 2020 Summer Olympics?

According to Sports Illustrated, Morgan has every intention of being in the squad that represents the United States at the 2020 Olympics, but with only 4 months of preparation until game day she’ll be fighting an uphill battle to be in peak condition and form for the tournament.

More from USWNT

The good news? The USWNT has an incredibly deep and talented front line.

The collection of players Coach Andonovski has to choose from includes Megan Rapinoe (2019 World Cup Golden Boot and Golden Ball winner, 2019 Best FIFA Women’s Player, 2019 Ballon d’Or Féminin winner and 2019 Sports Illustrated Person of the Year), Christen Press, Jessica McDonald, Lynn Williams, Carli Lloyd (seasoned veteran and 2016 Best FIFA Women’s Player), and Tobin Heath. These 6 formidable players are a combination of proven goal scorers and newer rising stars.

In the semifinals of the 2019 World Cup, Christen Press had her moment to shine as she stepped in to replace an injured Megan Rapinoe. She proceeded to head in a decisive goal to give her team the lead over England.

In that moment she won over every US supporter in that stadium and watching at home. Now four games (and four wins) into their CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying matches, Press has five goals, McDonald has two, Williams has two, Heath has one, Lloyd has one, and the USWNT has a guaranteed ticket to the Olympics.

The goals keep coming. And though a fully fit Alex Morgan would undoubtedly add to the prowess of the USWNT front line, the players currently available, backed by a tenacious backline and creative midfield, are more than capable of putting on a dominating show at the Olympics.
