Tottenham are not concerned about Eric Dier’s future
Eric Dier wants assurances from Tottenham about playing time before he signs a new deal. Don’t look for Jose Mourinho to give him any such promises.
There was a time when Eric Dier was one of the brightest young players in England. That time is not the year 2020. That’s why Tottenham won’t concern themselves with Dier’s unwillingness to commits his long-term future to the club.
According to The Daily Mail, Dier specifically wants assurances over playing time from Jose Mourinho. The player believes he needs to secure regular minutes if he wants to earn a spot on England’s team for the upcoming Euros. Dier is probably quite right in that belief.
The incorrect assumption on Dier’s behalf is that he should be concerned at all with international football. He needs to place a greater priority on playing better football for his club. Quite simply, he’s been horrendous for Spurs for the better part of the last 12 months (or more).
His poor form will result in Tottenham holding a firm line with him regarding any negotiations related to a new contract. There’s a reasonable argument to be made that Spurs shouldn’t offer Dier any sort of contract at this point in time. Instead, the club should be looking to sell him to a rival that believes they can get his career back on track.
Admittedly, that would be a risky move by Tottenham. Dier would almost certainly choose to continue his career with a Premier League rival if Spurs let him go. Even if Daniel Levy was able to earn a nice transfer fee for Dier, it would still be a highly scrutinized move by Tottenham fans.
It will be particularly interesting to see how Mourinho treats Dier in the short-term. The Portuguese gaffer was very high on Dier before arriving in North London. He gave him several opportunities to show he was deserving of a spot in his starting XI before dropping him due to his poor form. It might be difficult for Mourinho to give up on his affection for Dier as a person and player.
On the other hand, if Dier keeps putting in dreadful performances on the pitch it will become impossible for Mourinho to back him. The key for the player here is to improve his form. If he does, everything will take care of itself. If he doesn’t, Tottenham won’t think twice about selling him this summer.
