1. Real Madrid break their curse

Real Madrid had not beaten Barcelona in the league since the 2014/15 season when Carlo Ancelotti was manager. Things looked bleak heading into this match as well.

Not only were they heading into the game with a poor Clasico record, but they were coming off a loss midweek in the Champions League against Manchester City. The sting of losing back-to-back Clasicos last season also had to be weighing in their minds.

The victory surely broke any type of hex or curse they felt they were under. It wasn’t just that they won. It’s that they won despite a poor first-half and Barcelona creating the better opportunities.

That Vinicius Junior and much-maligned Mariano scored both goals is also significant. The former has had his share of problems in front of goal and Barcelona’s Nelson Semedo was getting the best of him during their duels.

The goal had its share of luck but that does not matter. A goal is a goal and to do it on such a big stage will do wonders for his confidence.

Mariano had hardly featured at all this season either because of injury or the manager’s decision. His cameo was mostly to waste time but put an exclamation point to the match. While a much closer affair, it is reminiscent of Jeffren scoring back in 2011 or Aleix Vidal a couple of seasons ago. Essentially, the icing on the cake.
