According to the Evening Standard, Ed Woodward is ready to take on Tottenham and Daniel Levy in an attempt to sign Harry Kane for Manchester United.

The England captain has been out with a hamstring tear since New Year’s day, and is expected to miss the rest of the season.

Tottenham have struggled in his absence, with Heung-min Son also recently suffering an injury. Lucas Moura and new signing Steven Bergwijn have been unable to fill the shoes of Spurs’ talismanic duo.

Kane has been previously linked with United, but no concrete move was ever made. Spurs’ troubles this season could change that though.

Former United boss Jose Mourinho is understandably reluctant to let the 26-year-old leave, and so is Daniel Levy. But recent speculation has claimed that Kane himself has been eyeing a move to Old Trafford next season.

While Odion Ighalo has impressed in his brief Manchester United career so far, his loan deal lasts only till the end of the season, and United would still need a long-term option up front.

The Red Devils missed out on Erling Haaland in January to Borussia Dortmund, and signing Kane would go a long way in compensating for that.

He’s been one of the best strikers in Europe over the last few years, winning the Premier League Golden Boot for two consecutive seasons in 2016 and 2017.

His excellent hold-up play and lethal finishing would make him a perfect fit for United, not to mention his chemistry with England teammate Marcus Rashford.

Apart from Kane, Ole Gunnar Solskjær is also keen on bringing Jack Grealish and Jadon Sancho to the Theater of Dreams, as he looks to complete his ideal midfield for the upcoming campaign. Birmingham’s 16-year-old Jude Bellingham has also extensively been linked.

All these potential deals could take United’s spending in excess of £350 million, with Kane alone sure to command a fee of more than £100 million. Levy will not be easy to negotiate with, but United fans can take hope from the fact that Woodward had agreed a deal for Gareth Bale in 2013 before he moved to Real Madrid, with the Welshman’s desire to play at the Bernabeu being the only stumbling block.

With United’s recent improvements and a strong summer transfer window expected, fans will be hoping that the Red Devils can launch an ambitious bid for league title in 2020/21.
