Four major teams, in need of a big win to head into the Champions League quarter-finals…

The first games of the 16th round of the Champions League have already been taken. As usual, we had unexpected results and others that simply clarified what we expected from certain teams.

It’s probably too soon to choose a clear candidate to win this year’s edition but we will be looking throughout history to try and decide who has a real chance to take the cup home, and who’s just not a real threat in a head-to-head competition. But first, we have to decide who’s heading into the next round.

Some of the unexpected games came with the biggest names in the tournament; Liverpool, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus. All of them ended up with a negative or unfavorable result meaning a tie or even a loss in their first game of the knockout round.

1. Liverpool

First of all, we have to look at the defending champion, Liverpool. Liverpool lost their second game in the competition against a good but not that good Atlético de Madrid. Even though they are only one goal down, it can be hard for them to come back in the series.

We all have seen what the team lead by Jurgen Klopp is capable of, obviously referring to Liverpool’s 3-0 down come back against Barcelona last season. We can even talk about teams history in comebacks, that 2005 final vs Milan, however, this team hasn’t looked good in the last few weeks.

After their lost against Atlético, Liverpool went back to the Premier League and barely defeated West Ham 3-2, and then, they were humiliated 3-0 by Watford, which meant their first loss all season.

Oh, and don’t forget about their elimination in the FA Cup in the hands of Chelsea 2-0. They are probably winning their home league, but if they continue playing as they have in their last 4 games, they might not be defending their title in the next round.
