LaLiga joins other leagues in suspending its competition due to COVID-19

LaLiga finally decided to act and made a decision regarding the status of its competition. The league is set to be suspended for at least the next two weeks.

LaLiga released a statement which said,

"“Given the circumstances that are coming to light this morning, referring to the quarantine established in Real Madrid and the possible cases in players from other clubs, LaLiga considers it appropriate to continue to the next phase of the protocol of action against COVID-19.”"

According to The Guardian, the situation the statement is referring to is there was a confirmed case at Real Madrid. One of their basketball players was tested positive for COVID-19 resulting in a quarantine for everyone at the club.

The basketball and football team share the same facilities so the decision was made to shut it down and send everyone home as a precaution.

This comes a day after Juventus player, Daniele Rugani, also tested positive for the coronavirus and the Juventus squad going into quarantine.

Initially, LaLiga’s plan was to go ahead with this week’s fixture except to have them played behind closed doors. Given what happened at Real Madrid, the only logical step is to suspend it altogether.

As we saw yesterday, the outbreak seems to be rapidly spreading and sports leagues are not immune.

The National Basketball Association (NBA) postponed a game minutes before it was set to kick-off after one its players tested positive and immediately decided to suspend the rest of the season.

From their statement, LaLiga will wait out the two-week quarantine period and then make another decision from there.

As it stands, there will be no games for at least two weeks which will create a headache of sorts in the calendar. If it comes down to suspending the league, then they will need to make a decision on what happens to the team in the title race and those fighting relegation.

But that should be the least of their worries at the moment. The right course of action was taken to prevent anyone else from possibly becoming infected.
