Liverpool would prefer RB Leipzig’s star striker Timo Werner over Dortmund standout Jadon Sancho…
With football at a standstill, the summer transfer window rumours begin to swirl all around Europe. Two of the Bundesliga’s brightest young stars in Timo Werner and Jadon Sancho could be leaving their respective clubs in the coming months and Liverpool is one side who is keeping close tabs on the two starlets.
Werner is enjoying a breathtaking campaign for Leipzig, bagging 27 goals in 36 appearances across all competitions, including 21 tallies in Bundesliga play alone.
His combination of skill, pace, and finishing abilities have caught the attention of numerous European giants, but Liverpool has been one of the keenest on his talents.
Sancho, who is still just 19, has voiced his interest in returning to the Premier League after growing up in England. He featured for Watford’s youth teams and Man City before making the move to Borussia Dortmund a couple of years ago.
After a breakout season last year, Sancho has blossomed into Lucien Favre’s star man on the attack, netting 16 goals and tallying 16 assists in 34 appearances so far this term.
Although clubs such as Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Manchester United have all shown interest in the Bundesliga duo, Liverpool could swoop in for one of them at the very least. According to The Athletic, though, Liverpool is more likely to favour a move for Timo Werner.
But here’s the reason that Jurgen Klopp’s squad would choose Werner over Sancho. The German international has a release clause this summer of just 52 million euros, as opposed to Sancho’s 120 million. Werner is also a tad older and slightly more ready for the pressure of England’s top-flight.

The current Premier League leaders have a prolific front three of Mo Salah, Bobby Firmino, and Sadio Mane who form one of the most exciting attacks in the world. It’s unlikely that the Reds would be able to sign both of the Bundesliga standouts given the hefty price tags, especially Sancho’s. They’re also far too talented to sit on the bench at Liverpool, so either Salah, Mane, or Firmino would have to leave the club in order for them to sign either player.
Given Werner’s admiration for Klopp and them both being German, it seems like the more logical signing for the Merseysiders. Werner isn’t going to break the bank as Sancho would and he’s proven to be absolutely clinical in the final third.
If one of Liverpool’s front three did leave this summer, I could definitely see them trying to sign Werner. At 24, he’s ready to move onto bigger things after already lighting up the Bundesliga.
Sancho could also end up at another European club, but at just 19, we could also see him stay in Dortmund for one more year. His asking price certainly won’t change though but given his world-class attributes, sides like Real Madrid, PSG, and even Man United will pay ridiculous amounts to grab a hold of the young Englishmen who is turning into one of the most exciting young prospects in world football.
It’ll be interesting to see if Liverpool ends up making a move for either Werner or Sancho, but as of right now, it’s looking like the Leipzig talisman could be at the top of their wishlist for the upcoming transfer window.
