Top soccer movies to watch during the suspended season
13) She’s the Man (2006)
A movie filled with many laughs, awkward romance, and of course soccer. Amanda Bynes and Channing Tatum star in this classic film on equality in sports.
After Bynes’ character’s school soccer program gets cut, she decides to play with the boys. Her own school won’t accept her so she disguises herself as her brother at a rival school and plays for them.
Is she good enough to play for them? Things get even more interesting when she starts to fall for one of her new teammates.
14) Kicking and Screaming (2005)
Looking for a comedic movie that can be enjoyed by kids and adults alike? Look no further because Kicking and Screaming fits the bill.
Father and son relationships, youth league soccer, this movie will have everyone laughing. A star-studded cast including Will Ferrel, Robert Duvall, the great Mike Ditka, and a young Josh Hutcherson.
Ferrel’s character takes over coaching a ragtag team for his son, he’ll have to compete against his long time rival coaching the best team in the league… his father. When deciding on movies to put on this list this was one mentioned by almost all!
15) Switching Goals (1999)
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen star in this 1999 film. One is an athletic tomboy who wants to be more girly and impress boys, the other gets the boys’ attention and loves fashion but wants to be better at sports to impress her father.
Let the role swap begin. Playing in the same soccer league on separate teams, they pretend to be each other to play on the team they want and each satisfies their own goals.
What happens though when they get found out? A Classic Olsen twin comedic film with a great message and of course, soccer.
16) Air Bud World Pup (2000)
Air Bud World Pup is the third instalment in the Air Bud movie series. This dog can ball no matter what sport he plays. As this is a list of soccer movies, this, of course, is the film where Air Bud (Buddy) plays soccer. Ever wonder what it would be like if a dog was the star player on a school soccer team? How about if a dog played for the National Team in the World Cup? This movie is definitely different from the rest but a fun-loving sports movie to watch.
17) The Big Green (1995)
A teacher from England moves to Texas for an exchange program. The kids she deals with have no confidence in themselves, low test grades and no great success at sports. As all inspirational sports movies though, that is soon to change. This Disney family comedy has a great message, good laughs, and is centred around the game we love, soccer.
18) Bend it Like Beckham (2002)
Finishing off the list we have a classic soccer movie. A teenage girl of Indian descent born in England is enamoured with soccer and wants to play the game, her parents though will not let her play.
With the help of her newest friend played by actress Keira Knightley, she joins a local soccer club to play the game she loves. A coming of age film that not only has a great story but more importantly here, great soccer.
Be sure to check out some of these soccer movies and hopefully we’ll have soccer back in no time!
