The Manchester United and Liverpool rivalry lives on, although this time it’s not on the field…

There’s no denying that Manchester United and Liverpool are two of the biggest clubs in the world, not just England. As an Arsenal fan, I can appreciate the sheer enormity of the two clubs, which always makes them active in the transfer market.

This is why it’s never a surprise to see them battling for the same players. Some names simply sit above others in terms of calibre in the market, so obviously the richest clubs in the world are going to battle for them.

This has yet again been the case, as reported by Manchester Evening News. Alex Dicken has made the claim that Manchester United have ‘held talks’ with Thomas Lemar, who is valued at just under £90m and is a former target of Liverpool.

More from Manchester United

The creative French attacker, who now plays for Atletico Madrid, first rose into prominence when he was part of the infamous Monaco team which included the likes of Kylian Mbappe, _Fabinho_ and Benjamin Mendy. Since then, his progress has been halted somewhat but he still has the potential to be a world-beater.

Atletico Madrid has brought in many attacking reinforcements over the last few windows so it’s clear to see why Lemar is receiving interest elsewhere. If Atletico deems him surplus to requirements, then he could easily fit the bill at Manchester United.

Lemar is a fast attacker that has excellent dribbling ability. He primarily plays out wide but he can just as easily drop inside and take the shot on himself. He is composed with the ball at his feet and what sets him apart from most wide-men is his distinctive footballing intelligence; he knows when a run is about the be made and he is sensible in choosing this option or not.

That said, I think Lemar would make the perfect addition to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team. He may be on the expensive side but the end result would pay dividends for the Old Trafford hierarchy. Ageing at 24 years, there is plenty of time for him to nurture into the player Solskjaer wants him to be.
