Three Mexicans among a handful of best players in their first Liga MX season with a new team.

Liga MX general managers were rather busy during the brief Winter break, shuffling their rosters in a bid to change their fortunes.

The Chivas got the most buzz, acquiring 9 new faces including 5 that figured to be on the national team in years to come. But then midfielder Víctor Guzmán flunked a drug test and he was sent back to Pachuca. Two other members of El Tri – Uriel Antuna and Cristián Calderón – underperformed and were eventually disciplined for off-the-field transgressions.

Two Chilean stars found their way to Liga MX, with expectations of stamping their imprint on the league. Veteran playmaker Jorge “El Mago” Valdivia helped “La Roja” win the 2015 Copa América, while youngster Ignacio Jeraldino, 24, earned an invitation to Team Chile after starring Italy’s Serie A in 2018. Valdivia is now with the Monarcas and Jeraldino, a striker, plays for Atlas.

Uruguay also supplied two big names as the Clausura got underway. Forward Nicolás “Diente” López played with Roma and Udinese before transferring to the Tigres in January while midfielder Pablo Cepellini joined Cruz Azul from Colombia’s Atlético Nacional.

Now, it would be far too premature to suggest any of these guys are busts (although Guzmán certainly deserves to be labelled a failure or some sort), but there are quite a few other players who have thrived and delivered in the Liga MX with their new clubs.

The following is my selection of the Top 5 Liga MX transfers through the first 10 matches of the Clausura 2020 season.
