Top 5 Liga MX transfers in Clausura 2020
Newcomer sparkles, two Liga MX veterans make a difference
At 21, Leo Fernández is an unassuming 5’6” wisp of a man. But on the pitch, he plays large.
The Uruguayan midfielder joined Toluca on loan from the Tigres after spending last season in Chile.
Toluca was given a chance to purchase Fernández’s contract last summer and surely they regret not jumping at the opportunity. The playmaker with the powerful left foot announced his arrival in Liga MX with a last-second game-tying blast in Matchday 4 against Cruz Azul.
Fernández is the quarterback of the Toluca offense and he has scored 8 goals through 9 games.
When América acquired veteran left-back Luis Fuentes, critics had a field day. The 33-year-old defender was several years past his prime during which he helped UNAM win two Liga MX titles. The Pumas traded him ahead of the Clausura 2017 season, reacquired him briefly in 2018 then sold him to Tijuana where he toiled for three seasons.
Fuentes was regarded as a veteran presence by many, but when given the opportunity to play, he proved his value. His reliability earned him the starting left-back spot on one of the strongest Liga MX defenses and he even filled in as a central defender twice with solid results.
Hulking Ariel Nahuelpán has proven to be a serviceable forward for several Liga MX clubs, even helping Pachuca win the Clausura 2016 title. He joined Querétaro in January after spending last year with Tijuana
The veteran Argentine is a reliable two-way player, always eager to chase back on defense and win the ball back for his team. His hustle and energy – and 5 goals in 8 games – have helped spark a Gallos Blancos revival when most pundits figured the team was in a rebuilding stage.
Honorable Mention
Pachuca goalie Oscar Ustari was a surprise addition to the Tuzos roster, but the 33-year-old Argentine has earned the starting job with strong play between the pipes. Ustari is second in the league in goals allowed per game while posting 3 shut-outs in 5 games.
UNAM striker Juan Ignacio Dinenno has allowed coach Miguel González to switch to his favored two-man attack, inserting the 25-year-old Argentine in the front line alongside goleador Carlos González. Dinenno has scored 4 times in his 8 appearances for the Pumas.
