Shkodran Mustafi is not concerned with his Arsenal future at this moment in time…

Shkodran Mustafi is like marmite to Arsenal fans. Some love him, others hate him. Those who love him are embracing the positive changes he has made his season under the tutelage of Mikel Arteta, while those who hate him still haven’t forgiven him for all his wrongdoings in the past.

One thing is for sure though. Especially in football, everyone deserves a second chance. Arteta is the kind of manager who picks his starting XI based on form, rather than previous missed chances, which is exactly what Arsenal needed going forward.

The truth is, Mustafi has stepped up to the plate and he is looking like a revitalised defender. For as long as this continues, the German defender deserves to be starting matches. I mean, the opposite view would be like saying a butterfly doesn’t deserve to fly because it once didn’t have wings.

According to Goal, Mustafi is giving no thought to his Arsenal future. This is amid reports that Arteta is willing to axe the defender in summer. However, he has addressed that some things are bigger than football and the coronavirus has his attention right now and “not so much (his) personal future.”

And rightly so. Some things are bigger than football and Mustafi shouldn’t be spending too much time thinking about his future. The best thing he can do, when it comes round to it, is to keep playing his football and either he remains an Arsenal player or he doesn’t, at least he will head out with a bang.

Mustafi is 27 years old so he is about to enter the prime stages of his career. Given the Gunners’ dependency on older centre backs in recent season, I don’t see why they wouldn’t be willing to give Mustafi a permanent slot in the XI, providing he is on form of course.
