Borussia Dortmund: Erling Haaland shouldn’t join Real Madrid this soon
By Quinn Allen
Despite his outstanding 2019-20 campaign, the 19-year-old could use another year of development before heading to Real Madrid…
Borussia Dortmund standout Erling Haaland has made a serious name for himself this season, which is attracting the interest of one of Europe’s most elite clubs. According to the Evening Standard, Real Madrid is keeping close tabs on the 19-year old and would like to bring him in this summer as a long-term option up front.
Any kid of Haaland’s age would be absolutely ecstatic about an opportunity like this. He’s already voiced that he’d be keen on the move, however, this summer is not the time for the Norwegian.
One more year at Dortmund
Haaland chose Dortmund over Manchester United in January because he believed it would be the perfect side for him to grow as a player and gain more experience at a higher level. The striker had nothing left to prove with Salzburg after bagging 28 goals in just 22 matches.
Once he arrived at BVB, Haaland continued his torrid form in front of goal, scoring 12 times in just 11 appearances. Haaland has quickly proven that even the Bundesliga is no challenge for him.

Even though he’s been unstoppable in the final third for Dortmund, it would be the smart decision to stay with the club for one more season. Haaland is still just 19-years old and even though he is extremely talented, going to a team like Real Madrid after the type of breakout season he just had will create huge expectations for him.
They’re one of the most successful clubs in Europe for a reason but they’re very hard on their players, especially if they aren’t performing.
For example, look at Luka Jovic. Zinedine Zidane had enormous expectations for the 22-year old Serbian after his breathtaking campaign for Frankfurt last year. But since his arrival, Jovic has underperformed, scoring just twice in 24 appearances.
Eden Hazard is another prime example as well. After starring for Chelsea for numerous years, injuries and lack of production have basically made him a non-existent player since signing with Madrid last summer. There have been many players that sign with this European giant after shining somewhere else, then their career takes a huge dip.
I’m not insinuating that would happen with Haaland, but at his age, it’s not the right time. Madrid has lacked a true goal-scorer since Christmas due to Karim Benzema‘s lack of production and Jovic’s non-existence when he does get on the pitch.
I believe Haaland could be an absolute star for Los Blancos in the future and the perfect replacement for Benzema, but next summer would be the better option.
Of course, after another quality campaign, Haaland will cost even more. But money has never been an issue for Madrid and if he’s performing, they’ll be willing to pay any amount to sign the Norwegian star.
The sky is the limit for Haaland and it’s will be exciting to see just how much he grows as a player in the next year. His combination of skill, physical presence, and finishing abilities are world-class and it appears that Real Madrid could most certainly be his next destination. But, in the future would be the logical decision for Haaland.
