Chelsea is a ruthless club when it comes to assigning contracts. Especially with Frank Lampard at the helm, the club won’t settle for the likes of Willian…
Willian is an excellent player when he wants to be. However, the problem for Chelsea fans is that it seems he only wants to be once in a blue moon. This is why it’s a surprise to me that he’s still wanted by some of Europe’s best clubs.
That’s just my subjective opinion though, which I’ll return to shortly. For now, the objective truth is that Willian only has three months remaining on his current contract and if he is to remain a Chelsea player next season, then things need to be sorted.
Obviously, the Coronavirus break hasn’t exactly helped the cause but it still seems likely that the Brazil international wants to remain a Chelsea player. According to a report from The Mirror, Willian asked for a three-year contract extension but Frank Lampard isn’t willing to grant him this request.

Honestly, I can’t blame Chelsea in any way. They have bigger aspirations than wasting their wage cap on a 31-year-old Willian who only shows up on the odd occasion. With the likes of Jadon Sancho linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, this is who they should be focusing on. Not Willian.
Frank Lampard was once a teammate of Willian’s so he knows exactly what he’s like to play alongside. That said, the English manager is in the best position to judge whether keeping ahold of Willian is worthwhile.
It does mean that the Blues will have to lose Willian for free and they run the risk of watching him play for rival clubs, with Arsenal being interested. However, watching the likes of Petr Cech and David Luiz play for them in recent years, I don’t think the Chelsea fans will be too bothered. After all, one club’s trash is another club’s gain.
Do you think Chelsea should keep ahold of Willian next season?
