Former PSG midfielder Jerome Rothen has claimed that Kylian Mbappe’s move to Real Madrid had almost gone through before the coronavirus outbreak.

Kylian Mbappe has long been linked with a move to Real Madrid, especially after Cristiano Ronaldo departed for Juventus.

Los Blancos boss Zinedine Zidane is also a huge admirer of the Frenchman, having praised his compatriot before Madrid’s Champions League clash with PSG last year, according to Goal.

But a move never really materialized, with Mbappe continuing to develop into one of the best strikers in Europe at PSG.

More from Real Madrid

The 21-year-old has already won 3 league titles and the World Cup with France, and has scored a mind-boggling 64 goals in 76 Ligue 1 appearances for PSG.

It’s no surprise that the French giants value him even more than Neymar, and wish to build their team around him.

Jerome Rothen, in an interview with Radio Montecarlo, has claimed that the club had an agreement with Mbappe to let him leave in the summer, and that a move to Real Madrid is now only a matter of time.

"“I know from club sources that a deal to take Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid was almost done. But with what has been happening, I’m sure that Mbappe’s arrival at Real Madrid will be postponed.” -Jerom Rothen (quotes via Goal)"

This will come as a huge surprise to fans, given that Neymar also appears to be very close to returning to Barcelona. It wouldn’t make sense for PSG to let go of two of their marquee stars in one transfer window. In any case, it appears that Mbappe’s future inevitably lies in Madrid.

Florentino Perez has not quite managed to fill the shoes of Ronaldo. He splashed out €100 million to bring Eden Hazard to the Santiago Bernabeu, but the Belgian has struggled with injury and fitness issues since his arrival.

With Gareth Bale‘s time also appearing to be limited, Mbappe would be a huge signing for Real – one that could re-establish them as genuine Champions League contenders.

As Rothen has mentioned, this transfer could possibly be pushed to January because of the current crisis, but the rumors cannot be ignored any more. And Mbappe looks set to break the world record transfer fee in the process.
