Why Willian would perform better at Liverpool than Arsenal

So, apparently Liverpool is now leading the race to sign Chelsea wantaway Willian…

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last month (haven’t we all?), then you’ll be aware that Willian is looking to leave Chelsea. First, it was thought he would join Barcelona, then Arsenal became involved, but now it seems to be Liverpool that are his likely suitor.

According to Sport Witness, Liverpool and Willian have begun talks over a potential pre-contract agreement. The Brazilian’s contract runs out at Stamford Bridge this summer, so he is free to discuss potential moves with clubs and they wouldn’t need to pay a fee, only his wages.

This could immensely benefit Jurgen Klopp and co, especially in these times of economic uncertainty due to the Coronavirus. That said, I have a feeling this move would also benefit Willian much more than it would if he joined Arsenal.

Why? Well, obviously Liverpool is in much better form these days than Arsenal are. They are the champions of Europe and have dominated the Premier League season, for crying out loud. But even from a tactical point of view, Liverpool suits Willian more.

See, under Jurgen Klopp, the Reds push forward with high intensity and they are very direct in their attacking play. Whether through the gegenpress (Klopp’s infamous high-pressing style), or through charging themselves forward with the ball at their feet, the Liverpool attackers thrive in the final third.

Arsenal, on the other hand, are a lot less direct than the Reds. Under Mikel Arteta, they tend to build-up their attack from deep positions, and it is often the fullbacks that have overlapped to help with attacking play.

Willian is a direct forward, so you already know where I’m going with this one. His main traits revolve around his speed, dribbling ability and his skill. That said, he would be much better suited to playing under Klopp than he would be playing under Arteta.

Sorry, Mikel.

Do you think Willian should sign for Liverpool this summer?
