Barcelona is really stepping up their efforts to sign the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Tanguy Ndombele. But is the swap-deal worth it?

It’s no secret that Barcelona will pursue a move for a midfielder this summer. With Sergio Busquets ageing, it’s important for Quique Setien and company to think long-term about his replacement.

One of the options Barcelona have is someone that they were interested in previously. I am of course talking about Tanguy Ndombele, the French midfielder who ended up signing for Tottenham Hotspur rather than the Catalan side last year.

However, his first season has been hit-and-miss, mainly miss in all honesty, and new manager Jose Mourinho is not the biggest fan of him. That said, he could be on his way out of North London this summer.

According to a new report from Sky Sports, Barcelona is stepping up their pursuit of Nbombele and are now willing to offer two first-team stars in his place. Those players are thought to be Samuel Umtiti and Nelson Semedo, which may be an attractive proposition for Spurs as they are likely to require a defensive revamp this summer.

But, is the deal worthwhile for Barcelona? Well, my first instinct would be to say no. In recent months, Ndombele has fallen out of favour at Spurs and it is not down to Mourinho’s harsh-nature. Indeed, Ndombele has looked lethargic whenever he has played and he has not moved the ball with the same conviction he did when Spurs first signed him.

This shows a level of inconsistency which is the last thing Barcelona needs as they hope to capitalise on their first-place La Liga standing. Ndombele has also had fitness issues since he does not appear to have the greatest stamina in the world.

However, on the other end of the dice, Ndombele is an exceptional talent and, despite his work rate, you cannot take this away from him. He is a fine dribbler of the ball and his broad frame allows him to be physical, which is a nice contrast to have.
