Chelsea’s fatal flaw in recent seasons? Their strikers have not been at the top-level.

Sir Alex Ferguson once said that attack will win you games but defence wins you titles. This is all well and good, but you still need to win those games in order to win the titles so it mustn’t be mistaken. Perhaps this is where Chelsea have gone wrong in recent seasons, as their strikers have not been up to the standard necessary, especially since Diego Costa left the club.

They have tried and failed to replace him. The likes of Alvaro Morata and Gonzalo Higuain, both of which were considered world-class, flopped at Chelsea. Eden Hazard also had a stint as a striker but this is not his natural position so it was never sustainable long-term.

Now the Blues have Tammy Abraham playing as a striker who, while he has performed amazingly this season, the inexperience means Chelsea have to sacrifice at times.

That said, it should come as good news to Chelsea fans that Frank Lampard has spotted this trend and is now working closely with the board to come up with a solution. Reports from ESPN suggest they are keeping an eye on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of Arsenal and hope to make a summer move for him.

As an Arsenal fan myself, let me tell you, this is the last transfer I want to happen. However, I can only applaud the Chelsea board as this shows intent, finally, to sign a capable striker who would actually improve the side, unlike the aforementioned names.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is a world-class striker. That is not bias, it’s the truth. Just a look at his goal tally over the last few seasons shows he is a reliable and consistent goal scorer, not showing dry patches, unlike most strikers.

Aubameyang is a quick player who likes to get in behind the defence and stretch defences. While he does not provide the roughness that Costa offered, oftentimes a little too rough, Aubameyang does provide one thing; goals. That’s all you need as a striker.

Do you think Chelsea should sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the summer?
