Arsenal needs to spend this summer shifting out some of their deadwood players…

Of course, signing many players in a transfer window can be considered successful. However, it’s important not to rest on your laurels in this regard. If there are still deadwood players at Arsenal after this transfer window, then it wasn’t a successful one, even given the climate of the transfer market.

There are many players that simply don’t suit the system imposed by Mikel Arteta and they should be shipped out, whether to raise funds or to use as leverage in potential swap deals. One of those players is Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

The Armenian international was signed from Manchester United to fill the gap left behind by Alexis Sanchez and, in fairness, he’s never been a terrible player for the Gunners. However, at the same time, he hasn’t exactly set the world alight after his Emirates Stadium debut.

He will return to North London this summer from his loan at Roma, but according to the Mirror, Arsenal will look to sell him to raise funds. And it’s the right thing to do.

Arteta is surely going to look to improve his midfield this summer since this was the main position of concern to him when he was unveiled as manager. However, the Armenian is not what Arteta needs. Yes, he is great creatively, but so is Thomas Partey and Orkun Kokcu, two players which the Gunners are linked with this summer.

Realistically, money can still be made from the sale of Mkhitaryan. It’s bound to be a cut-price deal, given the market being so negatively impacted by the Coronavirus pandemic. Still, it’s good to see the board is doing the right thing and listening to offers for Mkhitaryan because it’s what’s best for all parties involved.
