Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois wants season to restart in order to fairly decide the league title.

Spain taking steps to restart the season is music to the ears of Real Madrid keeper, Thibaut Courtois. Being able to finish out the season is something Courtois wants so it can determine who takes the league title.

Should it be called the way things stands now, Barcelona would be crowned champions and Courtois does not believe that would be unfair to Real Madrid.

"“We are only two points behind Barcelona and if the season were to be cancelled and Barcelona declared champions then it would be unjust. We drew with them and beat them this year, we were the better team.Source: Marca"

More from Real Madrid

Unsurprisingly, the Belgian international thinks his side have a chance to win and he should as they are only two points behind the Catalan side. However, his reasoning behind it is a little off.

It does not matter that Madrid has a better head-to-head against Barcelona. Every league is decided by whichever team gets the most points. Had they been tied when games were put on hold, his argument would have more weight.

After their Clasico win, Madrid was two points ahead of Barcelona. But they promptly went and blew that lead when they lost 2-1 to Real Betis. He’d likely be saying different if the roles were reversed.

He was asked then about the situation in the Premier League. His stance softened a little there and rightly so because Liverpool has an insurmountable lead over Manchester City.

But he isn’t the first Madrid player to come out and speak in favour of the restart so they’d have a chance to win the LaLiga title. Teammate Lucas Vazquez also came out and said that he was confident Real Madrid would overcome their deficit and win the league in the end.

To his credit, he never said he believed awarding the title to Barcelona would be unfair.

We’ve seen some of the big European leagues already take a stand. Ligue 1 decided to cancel the season and go off the current standings which saw PSG be crowned champions. The Eredivisie cancelled their season but did not give the title to Ajax.

Javier Tebas’ goal has been to end the season properly. However, it will be interesting to see the reaction if players start testing positive for the virus. If that happens and no games are played or the standings remain the same, there might not be any other choice than to cancel the season with Barcelona as champions.
