For any Chelsea fan, seeing a player want to stay at the club is truly heartwarming. But is Pedro worth the risk?

Football players come and go, sometimes even for free. Chelsea fans know this too well since one too many players have their contracts expiring this summer. Pedro is certainly one of them, with many potential suitors being lined up for the Spaniard.

However, he has shown remarkable motivation to remain a Blue and to sign a new contract. According to ESPN, Pedro is refusing to give up and he insists on signing a new contract. This is surely going to be appreciated by fans, but will the board appreciate his reluctance to give up his spot?

Well, the truth is, Pedro is ageing. He is now 32, and given his career has revolved around his electrifying pace and dribbling ability, he has certainly lost a yard of pace in recent seasons. He is still a maestro in the attack, as you do not lose technical ability with age, but his deterioration in athleticism will concern Frank Lampard.

However, it will and should come as a compliment to the English manager. Pedro’s eagerness to stay at the club regardless of interest elsewhere just goes to show that Chelsea still has the pulling power, and Lampard has made an astonishing turnaround at the club in such little time.

Lampard has given greater emphasis to younger players in the squad, which has meant that Pedro has sometimes had to sit out to accommodate for Callum Hudson-Odoi and company. Still, Pedro is showing emphatic sportsmanship to understand this and want to persevere as a Blue still.

With Chelsea showing interest in the likes of Timo Werner and Jadon Sancho this summer, it’s easy to see why Pedro is fearing exit signs. However, I’m sure the list of potential suitors will only continue to grow with the implications of the Coronavirus on the transfer market.

Do you think Chelsea should aim to keep Pedro or let him leave for free?
