Arsenal will likely have to look elsewhere if they wish to strengthen in the centre back department after Dayot Upamecano’s agent has sparked doubt…

The centre back position has been an area of concern for Arsenal over the last few decades, this is undeniable. The club has invested heavily into this position without any fruitful reward. Well, Mikel Arteta wants to be the man to change this misfortune.

Quite early on in his Arsenal tenure, the improvements he had made to the defence were stellar. The likes of David Luiz and even Shkodran Mustafi have improved tenfold under the new manager and fans hope they won’t be the only two examples.

With William Saliba arriving back from loan, things are starting to look positive from a defensive point-of-view for the Gunners. However, the Spanish boss wanted to put the icing on the cake with the signing of Dayot Upamecano, and fans wanted it too.

However, according to a new report from Sport 1 (via Metro), they may need to look elsewhere. The outlet claims that Upamecano’s agent has ruled out any big move for his client, given the financial implications that the Coronavirus will bring.

Of course, there are other options for the Gunners should they still wish to strengthen defensively. However, Upamecano was always the best option so this will come as a big blow. Still, it shows that he will likely still a Leipzig player come January, when Arsenal is hopefully financially better off, so there’s always that to cling onto.

On the other hand, Jerome Boateng is looking increasingly likely to leave Bayern Munich for free this summer. Nobody thinks he will sign a new contract. That said, Arteta could easily opt for Boateng as a short-term option. After all, his experience at the top level will prove beneficial to the young defenders.
