Dries Mertens

As Lautaro Martinez has lit up Serie A this season, rumours have swirled about him potentially being signed by one of Europe’s other top clubs and now it seemed Inter has accepted this as a reality. Inter Milan readying themselves to negotiate with Barcelona means that they now need to find a new partner for Romelu Lukaku to keep this attack operating at a high-level next season. That new partner should be Dries Mertens.

Dries isn’t exactly coming off of the most impressive season of his career, but that is due at least in part to Napoli struggling as a whole. However, Inter Milan would be able to get him as a free transfer and he should still have enough left in the tank to serve as a perfect complement to Lukaku.

More from Serie A

Mertens isn’t far removed from his peak as he was able to score 16 goals and supply another 11 in Serie A play last season. If he can get close to that level of production again next year, then he would ensure that Inter Milan doesn’t miss Lautaro’s production for the year and give them time to find a longer-term replacement, develop a young player like they did with Lautaro, or give them a year to see what they have in a player like Simeone..

Signing Mertens would also have the benefit of not needing time to develop chemistry with Lukaku because of their history playing together for the Belgian national team. Adding a second Belgian to the starting lineup could also help Inter land Thomas Meunier to round out their starting squad.

Signing Mertens won’t be the huge news it would have been a couple of years ago, but it’s a cheap option to bolster their attack without preventing themselves from building up other areas of the squad.
