Liverpool will aim to sell three players so they can sign Werner…
With the transfer window quickly approaching, tons of rumors are heating up, including the ongoing speculation that Liverpool will sign Red Bull Leipzig star Timo Werner. Jurgen Klopp’s side is the clear-cut favorites to secure the German’s signature this summer but even though he will only cost around 50 million euros, funds are tight nonetheless because of the worldwide pandemic.
With that in mind, the Reds have now figured out a way to bring Werner to Anfield in the coming months; offload three players to fund a move. According to the Athletic, Liverpool is planning to sell Xherdan Shaqiri, Harry Wilson, and Marko Grujic, which should most certainly give them enough money in order to nab their top transfer target in Werner, who’s already bagged 27 goals this season.
The Reds have been heavily linked with the player for the majority of 2020 so far and both parties seem very keen on a move. Werner is determined for a new challenge in a different league and Klopp is fond of his fellow countrymen’s talents. The 24-year old Leipzig standout has been one of the top strikers in Germany for each of the last three seasons and also one of the brightest youngsters in Europe in terms of his production in the final third.

Werner’s Leipzig contract doesn’t expire until 2023, but he has made it very clear that it would be a “dream” to play at Anfield under Klopp. Before Coronavirus came along, there wouldn’t have been any doubts that Liverpool could sign the German, considering his price tag of just 51 million euros. For a player of his talent, it’s quite a bargain.
But unless the Reds are able to successfully sell their trio of players, then it could still be difficult to bring Werner to the club this summer. Shaqiri has struggled to break into first-team football with the Reds and could definitely be a valuable asset to another side in the Premier League or any other team in Europe for that matter.
Liverpool is hoping to sell the Swiss international for 30 million euros, with Roma previously interested in him back in January. As for Wilson and Grujic, both are on loan with Bournemouth and Hertha Berlin, respectively. They may not get a lot of money for the two players, but any amount would help them in regards to landing Werner.
With the Premier League title basically wrapped up already and the pandemic looming, it’s unlikely that any of their attacking players will leave this summer. If Werner did make a move to the club, he would face stiff competition for playing time, with Mo Salah, Sadio Mane, and Roberto Firmino all mainstays on the front line.
If he ended up staying with Leipzig for another season, Werner’s price tag would drop to 40 million. By that time as well, the Reds could sell one of their strikers in order to free up space in the final third for the German. But nonetheless, he still remains their number one priority for this summer. If Liverpool is able to sell the targeted players, it will seem more likely that Werner could be suiting up at Anfield next season.
