It’s not the only time Arsenal and Chelsea have locked horns…

The summer transfer window is fast approaching and it’s bound to be one like no other. However, one thing remains the same; Premier League clubs fighting over the same player. This isn’t the first time Arsenal and Chelsea have pursued the same name in the transfer window, and it certainly won’t be the last either.

According to a new report from the Sun, both London clubs are keeping an eye on Kaan Kurt of Borussia Monchengladbach, with the hopes of signing him this summer. The 18-year-old is yet to make a senior performance for the German club, however having played for the reserves frequently, he is considered to be one of the hottest prospects.

This transfer would obviously divide opinion from both Arsenal and Chelsea fans. Many will argue that if Kurt hasn’t proved himself in the first team for Monchengladbach yet, then why would he be good enough for the Premier League?

While this is very true, I must play devil’s advocate. Kurt is a prospect. Nobody is saying that he will sign for either London club and be a first-team star; if this happens, which there is a possibility given how well he performs, then that’s great. But this is not the sole reason he would be signed.

I’m assuming that given the lack of sentimentality Gladbach hold over him, that he would be affordable too. This is especially important, given the financial loss that both clubs are bound to endure following the Coronavirus crisis.

The main strength of signing Kurt is his versatility. He is best-suited to the full-back role at this stage of his career but given his age and subtle experience in the position, he is showing signs that he can be shaped into a winger.
